Note: the original owner removed a small protective plastic panel in front of the viewfinder (presumably to make it easier to clean out dust). This doesn't affect functionality but the viewfinder is less protected from the elements.

The circa-1994 Samsung ECX 1 is feature-rich zoom point-and-shoot with a radical design (by F.A. Porsche). We found it to be surprisingly user-friendly for a camera with such an array of features. The large easy-to-read top panel and clearly-labelled buttons certainly help with usability.

Contemporary review

The ECX 1 was included in a feature on the best point-and-shoots in the December 1994 issue of Popular Photography. Here's how they described the camera:

"The biggest and most feature-packed camera Samsung has made to date, the ECX 1 carries the longest zoom on a current P/S, extending to 140mm at tele. With body by the Porsche Design Group, it also represents a clean break by Samsung, which up until now has produced good-quality but rather derivative point-and-shoot designs. Interesting? You bet. Controversial? Certainly. Original? Beyond a doubt.

Features: Here goes: Standard flash options (auto, on, off), plus night flash, on-demand red-eye reduction by single preflash; multi-beam and spot autofocus, snap mode, manual scale focus, infinity lock. There's backlight compensation plus exposure compensation, fuzzy-logic and auto-portrait modes, step zoom, single and double self-timer, provision for infrared remote, double exposure, interval timer, and panorama format.

Capability: That long, long zoom is fun for kid and pet pictures, distant scenics, tight portraits, but at f/10.5 it's quite slow, so use ISO 400 films. The lens on our early sample showed very nice overall performance, particularly freedom from flare, even in very hard backlight. The flash is more powerful than most. The meter handles most situations with aplomb, and for really tricky situations, the ECX 1 provides exposure compensation.

Convenience: That totally unorthodox, rubberized grip is both comfortable and steady. The busy, busy, LCD panel looks daunt-ing, but real-word labels and functional groupings make it pretty easy to sort out. The viewfinder has diopter correction, but the finder image is only so-so. Neat touches: The back has a click stop to stay open for easy loading, and the LCD panel illuminates automatically in low light. Zoom buttons take some practice."

Battery information

This camera requires two CR123 batteries (available as an option)..

Condition Notes

This camera was tested with batteries and a roll of film (the film was not developed). All modes are working correctly. The camera's true film-plane focus accuracy was verified on an auto-collimator and its auto-exposure was tested with a shutter tester and calibrated light source. The camera is in good cosmetic condition (see photos). As mentioned above the small plastic protector window for the viewfinder was removed by the original owner.
